Song of the Day 02/14/13: All my Life- K-CI and JoJo

Happy Valentines Day! I decided what better idea then to make today’s song of the day a love song, in fact this is my personal favourite love song. In fact, many years ago I decided this song will one day be my wedding song! The other day a guy in my class passed around a sheet of paper throughout the whole class titled: ‘what you think is the best love song from the past 20 years.’ While I looked at my classmates’ answers and took a little trip down memory lane seeing some of the titles, but mainly checking that this one wasn’t already written, without even thinking twice, I knew I had to write down this one. Not only is it catchy but also it really is a pretty song. How I discovered this song you might ask? Well way back in the 90s when I used to own many of the mix CDs from HMV, you know those old Planet Pop, Much Dance, Now, etc. Well this puppy was off of Now 3. I just went to www.nowmusic.com and discovered that they are currently on Now 83. I almost fell off my chair! That made me feel so old! Well then on the other hand, this song was released back in 1998, the year I turned 7 so it kind of makes sense! It’s a classic slow dance and belt out loud kind of song. It’s really good for anything but one day I really do hope to dance with my future husband to this at our wedding. I’m music programmer for my school radio station S@Y radio and this is actually one of the very first songs I uploaded into the system! Its great because the intro is almost a minute, giving the announcer a chance to ramble on before hitting that post. This song also happens to be the very first single off of K-CI and JoJo’s very first album, Love Always. A true gem if I do say so myself. On a side note, I just typed in ‘love’ to my iTunes and discovered I have 216 songs with the word in it! Crazy! Well I decided to keep my iTunes filtered to only this for all of February 14th; no I don’t even have a valentine but hey, doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate! Hope everybody has a wonderful day no matter what you’re doing and if you’re feeling a good love ballad, definitely crank this one first!

Song of the Day 02/13/13: Pork and Beans-Weezer

How did I pick this one for song of the day you might ask? WELL, I decided to go to my itunes and filter it by number of listens on songs, and Pork and Beans by Weezer takes the cake with 164 listens!! Apparently I really liked that song at some point in life. Not to say I don’t anymore or anything..I fully do, just when I was in first year university at McMaster I remember clearly having this song on repeat. This song came out not too long before first year, as Weezer’s The Red Album was released in the summer of 2008. The song is simple, very catchy, and if you really listen, you can look pretty deep into the lyrics. Its your typical adolescent song and the lyrics really stick. The music video is also pretty cool because it features many YouTube stars and actually won a Grammy at the 51st annual award show for Best Short Form Music Video. The song was pretty much inspired by front man Rivers Cuomo after coming out of a meeting pretty pissed off from being told by Geffen Records that the band needed to record more commercial material. So if you listen knowing that, it definitely makes the song more understandable!! I’ll post the music video up top of this because its pretty great and if you haven’t watched it you should!

Have a good night and for all you love birds out there, happy valentines day tomorrow

Song of the Day 01/24/13: Octopus’s Garden- The Beatles

Wow! I can not believe this is my first post about one of my all time favourite bands, THE BEATLES! Honestly, what is wrong with me? lol well I’ll stop dwelling on my slacking and get to the point. This is the only song Ringo Starr, drummer of The Beatles ever wrote (who goes by his real name Richard Starkey in the album info) and he sings it too! With McCartney and George doing some background vocals around the guitar solo. This is one of the happiest songs I know and definitely my favourite Beatles’ song. It reminds me a lot of my childhood because its one I’ve literally known forever and my parents used to play for me when I was little. This song is also off of The Beatles’ 1969 album Abbey Road, which if you ask me is a true gem and one of their best. I love how even though The Beatles haven’t been around for soooooo long they are still enormous in popular culture. I just got back from Las Vegas where I saw the Cirque Du Soliel show, LOVE (and let me tell you the scene with this song was just stunning). And aside from things like that The Beatles are still so alive today through cover bands, movies (Accross the Universe, Chapter 27, etc), documentaries and paraphernalia! Its really amazing to see, especially for people who were actually growing up while they were around like my parents. My mom ALWAYS tells me how the night they were on the Ed Sullivan show she got to stay up late to watch and how when her and her brothers were younger their uncle bought them Beatles wigs which was like the coolest thing! If you can’t tell by now I truly think The Beatles are just fabulous. They’ll never ever get old and honestly if you don’t love them, you don’t have a soul! Go crank Octopus’s Garden right now and really take it in. Its a good one and definitely a song I’m always in the mood for.

Song of the day 01/22/13: Party on 5th Avenue- Mac Miller

If this isn’t a great head bobbing song, I don’t know what is! Just blasted this puppy on my radio show and oh boy did it get the party started. This ones off Mac’s 2011 hit album, Blue Side Park. It has a fun and funky beat to it and its a great one to blast. Extremely catchy and before you know it, you’ll be rapping it too. Blast this one while getting ready for a party, pre drinking, driving (with no alcohol in you of course) and during your radio show!!!!

Song of the Day 01/16/13: Drive By- Train

Hey all! Sorry for not posting for a couple days, life as a Radio Broadcasting student can be a little drowning in work sometimes but here I am!! On a side note my new radio show for the semester starts Tuesday the 22nd and you can check out/like my page for it on Facebook by visiting http://www.facebook.com/MiddayMadnessWithGibs :)

I took a lot of thought to decide what to make today’s song but decided on one of my favourite bands of all time, Train! What I really like about Train is that they’ve been around for so long and their music just keeps getting better! Don’t get me wrong I love old Train, but when you compare them to how they are now its such a fun difference! First they came out with Hey Soul Sister and now they have their new album, California 37 that just came out in April. Its pretty sweet! I love this song in particular because its so fast paced and catchy!! I always play it in the car, on my break at work and while I’m getting ready for school. Its a great listen and you’ll learn the lyrics in no time!

Has anybody ever heard of the British band The Wombles??

LOL my friend showed me a video of them live because his friend saw them live at Glastonbury back in 2011. Strangest concept I’ve ever seen. I literally thought I’d have nightmares for life while watching. Their costumes reminded me of those creepy chuckie cheese puppets on stage and DON’T THEY SWEAT IN THEM??? lol…well we gave it a listened and when I closed my eyes I realized they kind of sounded like The Beatles..weird right!! Have a listen and share your thoughts I’m always open to new things and if any fans come across this I’d love to hear your stories!

Take it easy!

Song of the Day 01/11/13: Numb- Gary Clark Jr

TGIF! Hope everybody had a fabulous week!

My coworker just showed me this puppy and I instantly loved it! I have listened to it thrice in a row so far and have decided that it reminds me of a combination of Jimi Hendrix and The Black Keys! Can anybody say yum?? I did some research on Gary Clark Jr who is known for being the future of Texas Blues. Interesting! He has six studio albums, this one being off his latest released in october called Blak and Blu. Its a great listen and the guitar chords are just fab. I’d recommend this one for the shower, driving and hanging out with the crew.

Hope you all have a great weekend and I’ll be back soon with more!

ta ta for now

About Me

Gib

The name is Arielle but call me Gib. You can also find me at notoriousg.tumblr.com. I am a radio broadcasting student and music is my life. My field gives me enormous musical exposure and I love every minute of it. I love all genres of music but HATE country so do not expect to see any on here! This is the way this blog is going to work. I am going to be posting an artist of the week and song of the day (irrelevant to the artist of the week). These can be any songs from any genres, any decade, local bands, pop idols, etc. I have a great appreciation for underrated songs aka the last ones on the cd that people never get to. But thats not all. I will nit pick at every song I choose to the core and let the world know why I think they are amazing. My goal is to get the message out there and show the world what great music truly does have to offer.
